York Revolution baseball players meet with WellSpan patients for a day of outdoor games

Patients and caregivers were invited to meet with players and participate together in interactive exercises, including games of cornhole and basketball.

YORK COUNTY, Pa. — York Revolution baseball players stopped by the WellSpan Surgery and Rehabilitation Hospital in York Township for some fun and games outside with patients.

The outdoor activities mark an important step for residents undergoing their rehab journey.

"I've been through injuries," said York Revolution catcher Ciaran Devenney. "Any change in the same monotony of the every day got me through my rehab."

That was the goal of Wednesday's event. Patients and caregivers were invited to meet with players and participate together in interactive exercises, including games of cornhole, Connect Four, basketball and bocci ball.

"[The patients] are here after various types of injuries, illness, long hospital stays and this is a great opportunity to have a little fun and normalcy," said Haley Smith, a recreational therapist with WellSpan.

Players and patients were able to enjoy the nice weather and benefit from the day of games.

"They're super excited to see us. It gives us a good feeling in our stomach, giving our time back to them and making their day," said Devenney. "This is something they can tell their kids, their relatives."

"I love seeing my patients smile," added Speed. "I had a lady out here today who has been through a lot and to see her out here, smiling [and] laughing... it's something that patients will talk about for weeks to come."

The Revs' opening game will be held on Thursday, April 25. The first 1,000 fans can snap a replica Brooks Robinson White Roses replica jersey.
