Police use DNA, video surveillance to identify suspect in 2022 burglary

YORK, Pa. — A York man has been charged with committing a burglary in 2022 after investigators used DNA evidence left at the scene to identify him as a suspect, police claim.

Jelani Gassama, 20, is also charged with theft and receiving stolen property in connection to the alleged burglary, which occurred on March 24, 2022 at a home on the 1600 block of Grantley Road, according to Spring Garden Township Police.

The victim reported that someone entered their home and stole cash, tools, and other items worth more than $2,000, along with the victim's car, police said.

DNA and video surveillance evidence gathered during the course of the investigation identified Gassama, of the 400 block of W. Princess Street in York, as a suspect in the case. 

An arrest warrant was issued for Gassama on December 1, 2022. 

He was found and arrested on October 6, 2023, according to police.
