Hundreds of Special Olympic athletes compete in annual track and field event

Athletes from Cumberland, Dauphin, Perry and Northern York Counties competed at Lower Dauphin High School.

HUMMELSTOWN, Pa. — Hundreds of Area M Special Olympic athletes competed in their annual track and field event at Lower Dauphin County High School on Friday.

These athletes came from all over the Capitol region, including Cumberland, Dauphin, Perry and Northern York Counties.

Athletes ages 8 and up competed in the 50m dash, 50m walk, 100m dash, 100m walk, 200m dash, wheelchair races, running long jump, standing long jump, shot put, softball throw and turbo jav.

When taking a break from the competition, they had an opportunity to get lunch and participate in small carnival games and arts and crafts at their Olympic Village.

The athletes were joined with their buddies from their respective school districts.

The schedule of events included:

  • Athlete warm-up & aerobics:  9:30 a.m.
  • Opening ceremonies: 9:45 a.m.
  • Competition begins: 10 a.m.
    • Awards for track events are presented following each heat.
  • Competition complete by 1 p.m.
