New museum dedicated to Thaddeus Stevens opens in Gettysburg

The museum will feature an array of artifacts, including period newspapers, stoves made at iron mills owned by Stevens and a large collection of Stevens’ letters.

GETTYSBURG, Pa. — The first stand-alone museum dedicated to Thaddeus Stevens, called Thad's Place, held its grand opening on Thursday in Gettysburg.

It’s a perfect date for the museum, too.

April 4 is Thaddeus Stevens’ 232nd birthday and the 25th anniversary of the Thaddeus Stevens Society.

The more than 800 square foot space will feature the Thaddeus Stevens Society's array of artifacts, including period newspapers, stoves made at iron mills owned by Stevens and an extensive collection of Stevens’ letters.

The grand opening of the museum took place from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Gettysburg Mayor Rita Frealing and other local officials were scheduled to speak at the event. Tom Jolin, a Civil War period musician, provided entertainment during the opening.

The museum is located at 46 Chambersburg Street in Gettysburg.
