What happened in health news this week? | Health Smart

Here is a look at the top health headlines from the week.

YORK, Pa. —

Changes to WIC program

The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced the first changes to the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program in a decade.

The goal is to allow families to buy more fruits, whole grains and veggies but less juice and milk. Officials believe these updates to WIC aligns the program's food packages with the best dietary science--but milk advocates are not happy.

The USDA received more than 17,000 comments on the allowances--the first changes to the WIC program since 2014.

Drug maker reports insulin shortage

One drug maker's insulin for diabetics is out of stock in some areas, and now it's affecting a portion of the 8 million Americans who need the injections to live.

Drug maker Eli Lilly announced 10-milliliter vials of Humalog and Insulin Lispro injections would be temporarily out of stock through the beginning of April, and that once manufactured, they'd be shipped "as soon as they can."

Many people say they've spent the last few weeks playing a guessing game over which pharmacies have the specific insulin they need and one that their insurance covers.

Social needs keeps women from mammograms

A new government report shows about 65% of women ages 50-74 with three or more health-related social needs are not up to date with their mammogram screenings.

Health-related social needs include food or housing insecurity, lack of reliable transportation and cost to access health care.

The report found the more health-related needs a woman has, the less likely she is to get the vital test. The study was based on Centers for Disease Control and Prevention research from 2022.
