YORK, Pa. —

Vegan women run higher risk of developing pregnancy complications

A new study says women who follow a vegan or plant-based diet run a higher risk of developing pregnancy complications.

That includes preeclampsia and having underweight babies. The research, from the University of Copenhagen, found that those babies were half a pound lighter than babies born to mothers who ate meat. Scientists believe low protein intake might be tied to low birth weight.

Vegan pregnancies also lasted five days longer than the pregnancies of meat-eaters. The study analyzed data from more than 66,000 pregnant women.

Study: Alzheimer's disease could be caught early in those with vision

A new study shows that 94% of patients diagnosed with posterior cortical atrophy (PCA), also had Alzheimer's.

PCA is the decline of visual processing skills and degeneration in back regions of the brain. One of the researchers said that PCA is actually the second most common symptom of Alzheimer's, after memory loss.

Symptoms include failure to recognize people, difficulty reading lines of text and inability to judge distances. The study also revealed that PCA presents itself more often in women and that symptoms begin to manifest around an average age of 59.

CDC urges caution as measles cases rise

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say health care workers need to be on high alert for cases of the measles. This comes after the number of confirmed cases went up to 23 since December of 2023.

So far, cases have been reported in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware and the Washington, D.C. area. The CDC says most of the infections involved children and adolescents who have not been vaccinated against measles.
