Dogs set to be euthanized in Prince George's Co. saved after urgent plea to community

Part of our mission at WUSA9 is to inspire others to make a positive impact on the community, and thanks to you, 27 dogs set to be euthanized have found a home.

PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, Md. — Thanks to our community, 27 dogs set to be euthanized in Prince George's County have found their forever home.

One more dog named Clyde is still up for adoption. He is a 1-year-old male brown Terrier mix who is described as a staff favorite and very active. He does have medical issues, canine Herpes, so it is recommended that anyone who adopts him follow up with a primary vet for information on treatment. This is not contagious to humans.

"Clyde pulls on the leash as you walk him, but less so the longer that you are out.  I think that with regular walks and a more routine bathroom schedule, he’ll easily learn a loose leash walk with his new family.   Clyde met some visitors who were looking for their next dog and he happily accepted pets from them and wasn’t at all shy.  He politely took a treat from them.  Clyde wasn’t jumpy or mouthy and his manner of taking treats gently makes me think that he could do well in a household with dog savvy children and appropriate parental supervision of interactions with kids," according to his bio online.

Due to his breed, shelter staff says he will need to be adopted out of county. Anyone interested is asked to bring two forms of proof of residence (like a drivers license and a car registration).

Staff says they are in "shock and awe" with just how many community members have come out to help. The shelter has a total of 84 pending adoptions in just the past two days.

These recent adoptions come after the Prince George's County Animal Shelter took to Facebook Wednesday morning to make a desperate plea to save 28 dogs who were set to be euthanized as the shelter neared capacity.

Unfortunately, two dogs who needed to be pulled by a rescue, and weren't up for open adoption, could not be saved.

The Prince George's County Animal Shelter isn't the only organization nearing capacity and in desperate need of adopters. Fees have been waived at the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria through the weekend for all adoptable dogs.
