What it takes to be nominated for a Jefferson Award

It doesn't take a huge gesture to be worthy of being recognized.

YORK, Pa. — For the past couple of years, FOX43 has teamed up with Multiplying Good for the Jefferson Awards.

The awards recognize people in our communities who go out of their way to help others, and we need your help finding them!

It doesn't take an army to make a difference in other people's lives. One person's small act of kindness can have a huge impact and be plenty worthy of a Jefferson Award nomination. We've already gotten some great nominations this year, but below is the perfect example of doing something small that turns into something pretty sweet.

Since the first grade, now 10th grader at Lower Dauphin County High School Ian Lane has been helping raise money for the Bethesda Mission Men's and Women's Shelter in Harrisburg. It's all thanks to some bubblegum.

Nothing extravagant, just some good ole fashioned gumballs.

For the past nine years, Ian has packaged them up and taken them to sell at events, with all proceeds going to the Mission. Although he was a little shy to talk on camera, his mom Jane says his selflessness has always amazed her.

"A young man who wants to put others ahead of him is a great aspect to have, and I am very, very highly proud to call him my son," said Jane Lane of her son.

Over the years, Ian has single-handedly helped raise thousands of dollars for those who truly need it—and he is affectionately referred to now as "the gumball kid."

So you see, you don't have to change the world to do some good in your community. Ian saw homeless people under a bridge when he was 6 years old and decided to do something to help them.
