Adams County community members celebrate Cinco de Mayo

Cinco De Mayo has been celebrated in Mexico for more than 160 years and continues to grow in popularity throughout the United States.

ADAMS COUNTY, Pa. — Dreary weather on Sunday didn’t stop members of the Saint Francis Xavier Catholic Church from celebrating Cinco de Mayo.

“We are so proud that more people are coming from different cultures. They wanted to find out how we do things,” said Mel Garcia, an event organizer and parishioner.

The holiday commemorates Mexico’s victory over France during the battle of Puebla in 1862.

About 2,000 Mexican soldiers fought off the invading French force of 6,000 men under the command of Napoleon III.

The holiday, which translates to the fifth of May in English, is sometimes mistaken for Mexico’s Independence Day, celebrated in September.

Garcia says the celebration didn’t reach his community until 15 years ago.

“The community from Mexico stuck together and all of sudden somebody mentioned celebrating Cinco de Mayo and that’s how we started here in Adams County.”

Hundreds of people came out to enjoy a day of music and authentic Mexican cuisine, with Garcia estimating more than 1500 would show up throughout the day.

“I heard about Mexican food, the celebration and the cause, where it’s all going, and so I came out in support of it,” said Mario Garcia, a guest and parishioner.

Other guests, like Gabi Cranga, say the best part about the holiday is celebrating with other people.

“When you share a meal with people, you’re sharing something special, like a part of your culture, that you want someone else to take part in,” Cranga expressed.

In the United States, Cinco de Mayo has become a day that celebrates victory and togetherness.

“There’s no division in the sense that you can still share someone’s culture, even if it’s not the culture you’re born into,” Cranga said.

“They like us here and we like them here,” Garcia added.

Any money raised from the event is expected to be used for future church events and gatherings.
