Tips to stay safe during storm system heading to central Pennsylvania

From wind and rain to even potential flooding, you may be wondering how to handle and prepare for difficult weather situations.

LANCASTER COUNTY, Pa. — From wind and rain to even potential flooding, you may be wondering how to handle and prepare for difficult situations during the upcoming storm.

According to the National Weather Service, a flood watch means that flooding may occur in certain areas, and residents should closely monitor rivers and streams as well as be prepared to move to higher ground.

If there is flooding in your area, report it to the township or call the non-emergency line for help. You can also try to alleviate that flooding by moving any snow, branches, leaves or debris from the drain.

The National Weather Service also says when there’s a high wind event you should take shelter and not go outside. A storm like this could take down trees, blow around outdoor furniture and knock out the power.

If you are caught outside, try to avoid trees and power lines, especially near the side of the road.

Keep in mind that downed power lines may be live. If a power line falls, officials say you should stay away from the line and call 9-1-1 along with the power company.

If your heat goes out, Todd Webb, public works director with Swatara Township, said there are several things you can do.

“Try to keep your home as warm as possible; if you have a working fireplace, use your wood fire, if you have propane to help things keep warm,” said Webb. "Don’t open any doors, don’t open any windows, keep things as warm as you can, and try to get an update on how long outages would be."

The better insulated your home is, the better it will keep heat in during power outages.

Webb also said weatherproofing your home is the best thing you can do when it comes to storms like this.
