Winter weather restrictions lifted on Pennsylvania highways

Certain vehicles were banned from traveling on some roadways due to slippery conditions caused by the expected winter weather.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) temporarily restricting travel on highways across the Commonwealth due to the winter weather impacting the area.

As of 2:30 p.m., PennDOT lifted all speed restrictions. 

Here is a breakdown of what types of vehicles were banned and where they were prohibited, as well as information on where PennDOT reduced the speed limits.

Adams County

Route 15

On U.S. 15 northbound between the Maryland State Line Exit: PA 581 East/To I-83 - Harrisburg/Hershey, the speed limit is reduced to 45 mph. Commercial vehicles are allowed in the right lane only.

Cumberland County

Route 15

On U.S. 15 southbound between Exit: PA 581 East/To I-83 - Harrisburg/Hershey and the Maryland State Line, the speed limit is reduced to 45 mph. Commercial vehicles are allowed in the right lane only.

Dauphin County

Interstate 83

The following vehicles are restricted on I-83 southbound between the beginning of I-83 and the Maryland State Line: motorcycles, vehicles with tow behind trailers, RV/campers, empty box trucks, tractors without trailers, permitted loads, empty tandem trailers, empty straight trailers, school buses, commercial buses and motor coaches without chains or ATD onboard, school buses, commercial buses and motor coaches with chains or ATD onboard and loaded tandem trailers without chains or ATD onboard.

On I-83 southbound between the beginning of I-83 and the Maryland State Line, the speed limit is reduced to 45 mph. Commercial vehicles are allowed in the right lane only.

Interstate 283

The speed limit on the entirety of I-283 northbound and southbound has been reduced to 45 mph. Commercial vehicles are allowed in the right lane only.

Franklin County

Interstate 81

The following vehicles are restricted on I-81 northbound between the Maryland State Line and Exit 151B: I-80 West - Bloomsburg: motorcycles, vehicles with tow behind trailers, RV/campers, empty box trucks, tractors without trailers, permitted loads, empty tandem trailers, empty straight trailers, school buses, commercial buses and motor coaches without chains or ATD onboard, school buses, commercial buses and motor coaches with chains or ATD onboard and loaded tandem trailers without chains or ATD onboard.

On I-81 southbound between the Maryland State Line and Exit 90: PA 72 - Lebanon, the speed limit is reduced to 45 mph. Commercial vehicles are allowed in the right lane only.

Lancaster County

Route 30

On U.S. 30 westbound between Exit: PA 23 West - Walnut Street and Exit: U.S. 15 North, the speed limit is reduced to 45 mph. Commercial vehicles are allowed in the right lane only.

Lebanon County

Interstate 78

The following vehicles are restricted on I-78 eastbound between Exit 89: I-81 North - Hazleton and the New Jersey State Line: motorcycles, vehicles with tow behind trailers, RVs/campers, empty box trucks, tractors without trailers, permitted loads, empty tandem trailers, empty straight trailers, school buses, commercial buses and motor coaches without chains or ATD onboard, school buses, commercial buses and motor coaches with chains or ATD onboard and loaded tandem trailers without chains or ATD onboard.

Interstate 81

On I-81 southbound between Exit 90: PA 72 - Lebanon and the Maryland State Line, the speed limit is reduced to 45 mph. Commercial vehicles are allowed in the right lane only.

On I-81 northbound between Exit 89: I-78 East - Allentown and Exit 151A: I-80 East - Stroudsburg, the speed limit is reduced to 55 mph.

York County

Interstate 83

The following vehicles are restricted on I-83 northbound between the Maryland State Line and the end of I-83: motorcycles, vehicles with tow behind trailers, RV/campers, empty box trucks, tractors without trailers, permitted loads, empty tandem trailers, empty straight trailers, school buses, commercial buses and motor coaches without chains or ATD onboard, school buses, commercial buses and motor coaches with chains or ATD onboard and loaded tandem trailers without chains or ATD onboard.

On I-83 northbound between the Maryland State Line and the end of I-83, the speed limit is reduced to 45 mph. Commercial vehicles are allowed in the right lane only.

Route 30

On U.S. 30 eastbound between Exit: U.S. 15 South and Exit: PA 23 West - Walnut Street, the speed limit is reduced to 45 mph. Commercial vehicles are allowed in the right lane only.
