WASHINGTON, D.C., USA — As the Hershey Bears prepare for another championship playoff run, some former players are drawing on experience from last year's Calder Cup journey to help them with their playoff push with the Washington Capitals.
"It's been unbelievable. This is a dream come true to be able to make it here for a full season and hopefully establish myself in this league," said Beck Malenstyn, Washington Capitals forward and 2023 Calder Cup Champion. "I am just trying to soak it all in [with] meaningful games down the stretch, [we're] right in the playoff race."
Amid their playoff push, the Washington Capitals have a handful of former Bears on their roster including Malenstyn, Connor McMichael and Alexi Protas. They were all a part of the Bears' 2023 Calder Cup-winning team, and are now using their experience to help them on the biggest stage amid an important NHL playoff race.
"I think I've been leaning on that experience every single game," said McMichael. "We've been in playoff mode for the last three or four weeks, so every game feels like a must-win for us. [The experience has helped] knowing how you have to play and how every single play matters. You never know what little detail can end up with the puck in the back of your net or a goal for [us]. There's just a lot of things to take from last year and implement into my game this year."
A journey that the Calder Cup three can take on together on hockey's biggest stage.
"It's pretty fun, that work paid off. We're here and it's pretty special to share it with those guys," said Protas. "Being together and bringing it from last year to this year, bringing that friendship and connection to the next level is pretty special."
With two games left, the Washington Capitals sit three points out of a playoff spot behind the New York Islanders.
