Julian Fleming heading to Penn State

The former Southern Columbia standout and Ohio State Buckeye is coming back home to play football at Penn State.

COLUMBIA COUNTY, Pa. — "Every now and then he'll throw in there the state championships, how he holds more rings than me, but I mean, you got a look at it now he's got what a Rose Bowl ring too, so he's got a lot more to brag about," said Cameron Young.

A state championship win as a Southern Columbia Tiger is one thing Young says he's able to share with his good friend Julian Fleming, who announced Wednesday on social media that he would be transferring to Penn State.

"I was never able to go out to Ohio State being in school to watch and play, so now only being what two hours away now, it's good that I can actually go and watch him play, and I think he fits in perfectly in Penn State," said Young.  "I think he could be the guy at Penn State."

Young says hearing about the hometown kid getting to play for his hometown team is a great honor for a community that he says lives and breathes football.

"Just being able to watch someone that you watched for five dollars here be able to just go down the road and watch him perform for your home team," said Young. "I think he's going to do phenomenal there."

Fleming graduated from Southern in 2020 and disappointed some hometown fans when he chose to go to Ohio State, but Young says Fleming never forgot about where he came from.

Every summer, the wide receiver holds a football camp at the same stadium where both he and Young learned the game.

"I'm excited to watch him, and I think he's gonna have a great year there," said Young.

A great year, Young says, as long as Fleming stays off the golf course.

"We also have a lot of golf memories, too," said Young. "I won't discuss his slice or his god-awful chipping game."
