World War II veteran from Pennsylvania passes away

John Matusek Sr. served in the Army from 1942-1946. He shared stories of his service in May, when he celebrated his 104th birthday.

LUZERNE COUNTY, Pa. — A Luzerne County man who served in World War II passed away this week at the age of 104. 

John Matusek Sr. was born in Mocanaqua in 1919 and enlisted in the Army in 1942, where he served as a Staff Sargeant in the Pacific Theatre, New Guinea Campaign during World War II. 

He received a Bronze Service Star and was honorably discharged in 1946. 

After returning to Luzerne County, he worked alongside his family at their grocery store, Matusek’s Market in Mocanaqua, before retiring at the age of 85.
