Malcolm Kenyatta wins Democratic primary for Auditor General

Kenyatta defeated challenger Mark Pinsley and will appear on the November ballot against Republican Timothy DeFoor.

HARRISBURG, Pa. — Democrat Malcolm Kenyatta will face off against incumbent Republican Timothy DeFoor in the November Pennsylvania Auditor General election

Kenyatta defeated Lehigh County Controller Mark Pinsley for the nomination.

He will now face off against incumbent Timothy DeFoor, who is seeking a second term in the four-year role.

Kenyatta was first elected to the Commonwealth's House of Representatives in 2018 and has served three consecutive terms. He became the first LGBTQ person of color ever elected to the state general assembly when he took office.

Kenyatta was born in Philadelphia and earned his bachelor’s degree in public communications with a minor in political science from Temple University, according to Ballotpedia. He previously served as the diversity and inclusion engagement coordinator for the Chamber of Commerce for Greater Philadelphia.

The auditor general is described as the state's chief fiscal watchdog. When the state collects taxes and decides to spend on a new building or program, it's the auditor general's job to make sure tax dollars are ending up where they're intended to be.

The auditor general is required to review much of the state's spending and report back to lawmakers and the public on whether it was spent properly.
