Fundraiser benefits injured workers

Six workers from Schuylkill County were injured during an explosion earlier this year in Philadelphia.

PALO ALTO, Pa. — People gathered on Saturday night in Schuylkill County to raise money for workers injured while on the job.

In October, there was an explosion on a construction site near the Flat Rock Dam in the Schuylkill River, near Philadelphia.

Six workers from Performance Construction Company, in Pottsville, were injured.

On Saturday, 'Six Strong' hosted a fundraiser at the Citizens Fire Company along West Bacon Street in Palo Alto.

Organizers say five out of the six workers are out of the hospital, but travel back and forth from Schuylkill County to Philadelphia to receive treatment. One worker, Mike Zawaski, is still in the hospital.

Newswatch 16 spoke with Mike's mother at the fundraiser.

"We're here for you guys, and you're all gonna make it through. And that's where I...We're blessed, we really are," said Jennifer Donaldson, Mike's mother.

All proceeds from Saturday's event will go towards treatment costs and to help support family members taking care of the victims.

"As you can see, they came from everywhere. They've given, they've supported, they've helped, they continue to. I'm not a girl for no words and I'm telling you this event has left me speechless," said Teri Salle, event organizer.

If you could not make it to Saturday's event and would like to help out Six Strong, you can check out their Facebook page.

Or, checks made payable to Six Strong and mailed to 23 East Carbon Street, Minersville, PA 17954.

If anyone would like to send Mike a Christmas card while he continues to recover, you can address it to Mike Zawaski at 741 Port Carbon St Claire Highway, Pottsville, PA 17901.
