$1 million lottery winner sold in Schuylkill County

Friendly Food Mart in Shenandoah sold the lucky scratch-off ticket.

SHENANDOAH, Pa. — The sign outside Friendly Food Mart in Shenandoah reads, "play here and win big." That turned out to be true!

Someone just bought a $1,000,000 Jackpot Party scratch-off for $20, and they won the top prize of one million dollars.

Lots of other customers have been trying their luck now, too.

"They were coming in trying to buy the same ticket, of course, saying, 'oh, you know, there might be another one.' They were just excited about it," Friendly Food Mart sales associate Tanya Weikel said.

The borough where this winning one million dollar scratch-off was sold has seen some hard times financially. Several storefronts on the main drag in Shenandoah have been empty for quite some time.

"A lot of the stores are closing in the area and all of that, business is slow and that, people lost their jobs from the coronavirus," Kimberly of Frackville said.

For years, Shenandoah had been on the state's list of financially distressed communities. This kind of money can make a big difference.

People Newswatch 16 spoke to hope the winner is a local.

"It would be a big help. A big help at this time with all the Covid and people not working. Hopefully, it goes to someone who really needs it," Jim Yanonis of Ringtown said.
