LITITZ, Pa. — Authorities in Lancaster County are warning residents about a suspected phone scam involving phony police officers.

The scammers are allegedly spoofing phone numbers and pretending to be members of the Lititz Borough or Northern Lancaster County Regional Police Departments, according to police.

They allegedly tell the recipient of the calls that there are warrants out for their arrest and that they must pay a bond to avoid going to jail, police said.

The recipient is then instructed to go to a business and purchase either Bitcoin or gift cards and provide the caller with the relevant information to transfer the funds.

"Unfortunately, most of the time you will never see your money again," Northern Lancaster County Regional Police said in the warning to the public. "At no time will the police or local Sheriff's Department ask you to withdraw cash and purchase Bitcoin or gift cards.

"If you receive one of these calls, please hang up and contact your local police department right away."
