DUNMORE, Pa. — Inside PennDOT headquarters in Dunmore, the traffic control center shows many bustling roads and highways in our area. Some of them will soon be under construction.
PennDOT officials say 102 projects will begin this season in District 4, which covers Lackawanna, Luzerne, Pike, Susquehanna, Wayne, and Wyoming Counties.
More than $276 million will be invested in the region's infrastructure for bridge work, resurfacing projects, and more.
"We're looking at about 140 miles of roadway improvements, 175 bridges will be addressed, and we're looking at doing 550 miles of sealcoat activities," said PennDOT official Richard Roman.
Nearly 100 projects will resume this season, including the twin bridges project along Interstate 84 in Lackawanna County.
PennDOT officials say that while it may be annoying for drivers, these projects are necessary.
"In District 4, we have 4,000 miles of roads and 2,100 bridges, so we have to do a lot of work every year to keep our system alive and functioning," Roman said.
When these projects resume, PennDOT asks drivers to be aware of crews working.
"When you're driving through the work zones, please slow down and be attentive to driving. Make sure you go through smoothly and safely so that we can continue the work."
The projects include:
- Resurfacing project on Route 11 (North Scranton Expressway) and bridge preservation on 7 bridges in the city of Scranton, Lackawanna County.
- Bridge replacement project on Route 115 over Interstate 81 in Plains Township, Luzerne County.
- Resurfacing project on Route 590 in Lackawaxen Township, Pike County.
- Existing structure replacement project on Route 247 over Dundaff Creek in Clifford Township, Susquehanna County.
- Bridge replacement project on Route 590 (Mount Cobb Highway) in Salem Township, Wayne County.
- Resurfacing project on Route 11 in Clinton Township, Wyoming County.
