CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. — Pennsylvania state Sen. Doug Mastriano on Friday announced that nearly $735,000 in funding has been awarded for a pedestrian and bicycle route project in the Franklin County borough of Chambersburg.

"These dollars will help build a walkway and bicycle route connecting different parts of the community in a way that will enhance our neighborhoods," the Republican state senator said in a press release. "Whether as a means to travel from one place to another or as recreational activities, walking and biking play important roles in building strong communities."

The project involves permanently closing two street blocks near the former Southgate Shopping Center to vehicular traffic, creating a pedestrian- and bicycle-only route, Mastriano said. It will create direct pedestrian access from the neighboring senior housing and residential blocks to a new medical facility while establishing greater bicycle and pedestrian connectivity to the Southgate neighborhood and the existing rail trail.

Funding for the project is provided through the Transportation Alternatives Set-Aside, Mastriano said.
