Most children don’t head back to school until the end of the summer, but already supplies are being gathered to fill hundreds of backpacks.
The “Fill the Bus” campaign is underway in Cumberland County, organized by Project SHARE.
The food bank is asking people in the community to donate school supplies like pencils, paper, crayons and more for the children in the families it serves.
Gail Patterson, Operations Manager at Project SHARE says, “There are kids in our community whose parents can’t afford to do that for them, and so to get them excited for school and give them the supplies they need, so when they go there they have the pencils, they have what the other children have.”
Project SHARE is collecting supplies like pencils, paper, crayons and backpacks to carry the supplies. It also needs glue sticks, 3-ring binders, scissors and more.
Organizers are hoping to fill about 550 backpacks this year. They will be given to the children at a Family Fun Fest scheduled for August 2nd.
Donations are being accepted until July 23rd at the United Way of Carlisle and Cumberland County, as well as at Project SHARE.
