MOUNT JOY, Pa.– The Mount Joy Borough Police Department is warning citizens of a potential scam involving FedEx packages.
This time of year, many people are awaiting the delivery of packages and scammers are taking advantage of this by using the “FedEx Home Delivery email and text message” scam.
The way this scam works is that a person will receive and email or text message that tells you that “your items have arrived, but our courier was not able to deliver the parcel.” The recipient of the message is then directed to check the attachment for details.
Although these messages look as if they are official and from FedEx, the company has assured the police that they do not send emails or text messages to customers. If a delivery cannot be completed, the courier will leave a “Missed Delivery” notice at your front door that gives instructions on how you can pick up your package.
If you receive one of the scam emails or texts, you should delete it immediately and do not open the attachment. Often, the attachment contains malware that can infect your computer, tablet, or smart phone that gives the sender access to everything on the device.
