EAST COCALICO TOWNSHIP, Pa.– It is a photo that has been shared more than a thousand times. It appears cinder blocks are holding up Route 222 over East Church Street in East Cocalico Township.

We reached out to PennDot officials who tell us it is there to fix the bridge. The steel beams have been place there as a permanent fix to the bridge. In 2010, PennDot had a deck replacement project on this bridge.

We received this statement about the bridge from PennDot spokesperson Greg Penny.

“As part of the project, we modified the rocker bearing assemblies with the steel bars as a permanent solution to properly support the bridge beams and provide for the proper “load transfer” of the weight on the bridge from the deck, through the bearing, and into the substructure. There will be no changes to the bridge until it is time to replace the superstructure many years in the future. The bridge is safe for people traveling both on it and under it.”
