HARRISBURG – Mayor Eric Papenfuse has declared a disaster emergency in Harrisburg after 14-16 inches of snow struck the city overnight Friday, breaking the 24-hour record for snowfall in the City.
“We are clearly dealing with an historic event in our City,” said Mayor Papenfuse, “but I’m confident our emergency responders and Public Works staff are well prepared to manage this storm.
The Disaster Emergency declaration will make it easier for city officials to secure the equipment, resources and personnel needed to battle the severe weather, said Fire Chief Brian Enterline. In addition, the Disaster Emergency opens the door for the City to receive financial support from the Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA).
Mayor Papenfuse said the city’s Public Works crews have been working to plow major roads during the snowfall, which is forecast to continue through Saturday.
Residents are reminded to obey all posted road signs and to remove cars from emergency snow routes.
Residents are asked to cooperate with snow emergency management in the following ways:
· Please do not use snow blowers to blow snow back into the street · Residents and businesses are asked to shovel sidewalks in front of their properties.
· Residents and business owners are asked not to place chairs or obstacles in parking spaces.
