LANCASTER COUNTY, Pa.–A former Millersville University student will stand trial in Lancaster County after admitting to putting bleach into his pregnant girlfriend’s drink in order to harm her unborn child.

Theophilous Washington, 20, waived his preliminary hearing Tuesday and remains in Lancaster County Prison on $1 million bail. He is charged with criminal attempted murder of an unborn child, criminal attempted murder of the first degree and recklessly endangering another person.

According to police reports, Washington gave his pregnant girlfriend a bottle of water, which he knew contained bleach on October 28. She drank some of the liquid at her on-campus room, vomited, then called 911.

A doctor examined the woman, then approximately two-months’ pregnant, and the unborn baby. Both are believed to be physically unharmed. Washington is the father of the unborn child, prosecutors said.

Washington admitted to authorities to putting bleach in the water bottle. According to police reports, he had stated previously that he did not want the woman to have the child.

Millersville University officials have said there was never any threat to the safety of other students.

Washington’s next court appearance is scheduled for January 13.
