UPDATE: Police confirm that one woman is dead in the accident.  A man and a toddler were taken to  Penn State Hershey. Police say the toddler was awake and responsive at the scene.

It happened on  the 1100 block Cly Road, just before 5 p.m. Three people were trapped in the car when emergency crews arrived.

“Newberry Township and Norfolk Southern will be investigating from all angles to see what took place,” says Sgt. Richard Rocco of Newberry Twp. Police. “The car was pushed approximately 45 yards down the tracks and then basically pushed off the tracks into a wooded area.”

A spokesman for Norfolk Southern says the track speed is 40 mph. A computer system on the train will shows its speed and other details. Police the the train engineer did blare the horn.

The spokesman says it’s a crossing on private property, so the property owner and railroad agree on what safety features are on the track. There are no gates or flashing lights at the crossing. There is a sign.
