CONESTOGA TOWNSHIP, Pa.--Hunters found an abandoned dog wrapped in a burlap bag next to the Conestoga River in Lancaster County on Wednesday afternoon, according to a news release from the Southern Lancaster County Regional Police Department.

The male pit bull was found  along Conestoga Boulevard in Conestoga Township around 2:55 p.m. He was injured from the tightly wrapped burlap, malnourished and suffering from hypothermia, police said.

The dog was taken to the Willow Street Animal Hospital for treatment. Investigators say they have found the dog a permanent home with one of the animal hospital employees.

"My heart was breaking, the tears were rolling," said animal hospital employee Karen Summers.

She is serving as a foster home for the dog right now. If the owner does not claim the dog, Summers will become the owner.

"This is fun for me because I love the animals and taking care of them," Summers said.

Anyone with information on the dog's previous owners are asked to call police at 717-872-0352.
