Man charged in deadly Christmas Day crash

A Lancaster man is charged with driving under the influence and causing a crash that left a woman dead and a child injured.

LANCASTER, Pa. — A Lancaster man has been charged with driving under the influence and causing a crash that left a woman dead and a child injured on Christmas Day 2023.

Steven Maldonado, 24, is charged with homicide by vehicle while DUI and aggravated assault by vehicle, among other related charges for his role in the crash.

On December 25, 2023, police responded to a deadly crash on Wabank Road near Rabbit Hill in Lancaster Township. According to the criminal complaint, it was a three-vehicle head-on crash with entrapment. Police say that one of the vehicles caught fire.

Authorities said that Karina Cruz-Camuy, 27, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, and a child was transported to the hospital. Both were occupants of Maldonado's vehicle.

Police said that Maldonado consented to a blood draw while at Penn Medicine - Lancaster General Health and doctors found that he had marijuana and fentanyl in his system within two hours of crashing the vehicle.

Officials were able to conduct crash reconstruction and determined that Maldonado was driving at least 50 MPH in a posted 35 MPH zone at the time of the crash.

Police said that due to the multiple driving infractions, Maldonado put his passengers and others involved in the crash at risk of serious bodily injury or death, and he will now face charges.

Maldonado was arraigned on April 3 and released on $100,000 unsecured bail.
