A community of nature lovers | Give Local York

The Hanover Garden Club welcomes people in the community to connect over their shared love for nature, gardening and wildlife.

YORK COUNTY, Pa. — Give Local York, a day of philanthropy designed to support the nonprofits helping people right in your own community, will take place from May 2 to 3.

As the event draws nearer, FOX43 will highlight some of the nonprofits that will benefit from the donations.

The Hanover Garden Club is one of those organizations.

The nonprofit offers a community to nature lovers and provides education about gardening, design and environmental issues. It hosts events like story times for children at local libraries, discussions on sustainable living and gatherings with other local garden clubs.

The organization has about 100 members. Its goal is to help introduce people of all ages—from children to seniors—to gardening and sustainable living.

"When you hook them young and get them really interested, we know that they'll be the future farmers, perhaps, or people who are organic eaters, and they're the ones who will advocate for healthy living," Jan Fritz, club president, said.

Donations from Give Local York will go towards funding scholarships for high school seniors or college students from the area who plan to study horticulture- or environment-related curriculum in their higher education.

"So we hope people will donate to help us help them help the planet," Fritz said.

Those who would like to support the nonprofit but can't donate are invited to join the club and get involved in community-oriented environmental events and educational opportunities.
