Members of Rotary Club of York work to beautify Continental Square

Members will be planting perennials, shrubs and flowers in the Square's five planters.

YORK, Pa. — Downtown York is going to look a little different on Thursday.

Members of the Rotary Club of York will be planting perennials, shrubs and flowers in the five planters on Continental Square. After the shrubs are planted, members say they will be adding lights to give the Square an evening elegance.

Organizers say this is an effort to help beautify the city and preserve downtown for generations to come.

Aaron Jacobs, president of the Rotary Club, says that for many years, the tree roots filled the planters and tree boxes, making it difficult to plant anything new. The last restoration project was 50 years ago, according to Jacobs.

The revitalization project is scheduled from 8 a.m. to noon on April 11 in Continental Square.

The City of York donated $32,000 for the restoration.

An endowment was created at the York County Community Foundation for the upkeep of future landscaping in the planters on the Square, including watering, mulching and the three plantings of annuals that will provide seasonal color.
