Deibler Family Adventures opens first freeze-dried candy store

The Deiblers say the freeze-drying process intensifies the taste of the treats. Every candy becomes crunchy, even if it started with a soft or gummy texture.

MOUNT HOLLY SPRINGS, Pa. — One Pennsylvania family is embarking on a new adventure of the freeze-dried variety.

Deibler Family Adventures offers freeze-dried candy, fruit, ice cream, cookie dough, pickles and more. The family started the business when their son expressed interest in freeze-dried candy.

"We're food preservers anyways with canning and dehydrating and whatnot," Brian Deilber, owner, said. "We said, 'well, why don't we just add a freeze drier to the portfolio of the tools in the house?' So we did it, and when we were done preserving for ourselves, we were like, 'alright, now what do we do with this big machine?'"

That's when Amanda Deilber had the idea to begin selling the freeze-dried treats at craft shows and similar events. Three years later, the Deilbers opened their first brick-and-mortar candy shop on Saturday.

"We had no idea it was going to go the way that it's gone," Amanda, owner, said. "We really started before the huge trend of everything, and it's just blown up. We had no idea."

Brian and Amanda say the freeze-drying process intensifies the taste of the snacks and sometimes makes sweet treats sour. Every candy becomes crunchy, even if it started with a soft or gummy texture.

Those interested can find the freeze-dried treats at various markets in central Pennsylvania or at the recently opened shop at 305 N. Baltimore Ave. in Mount Holly Springs. The store is open Wednesday – Saturday from 11 a.m. - 5 p.m.
