Hanover coffee shop turns retro for a week

Britton Coffee Company is celebrating the nostalgia of the 90s with specials like a Blockbuster Cold Foam, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Latte and Dunkaroo Donuts.

HANOVER, Pa. — A York County coffee shop is going retro for the week.

Britton Coffee Company changes their theme about every two weeks, and this week, it's the 90's time to shine like neon.

"Life seemed simpler in the 90s to me," Jordan Britton, owner, said. "And so we were like what can we do to just kind of give people—especially as it gets warmer out, people are kind of coming out of hibernation—how can we make this fun for our people."

Some of this week's specials include The Fresh Prince of Bel-Latte, Dunkaroo Donuts and a Blockbuster Cold Foam.

"That experience of walking around [Blockbuster] with your family is very reminiscent of our shops; we're very family focused and fun, we always have kid play elements at all of our shops," Hollenbeck said.

The yellow color on the bottom of the Blockbuster drink is made from the milk mixing with the caramel. The blue cold foam is toffee nut flavored.

"I don't know if you guys remember being 9 years old, dad picking you up and going and grabbing pizza and grabbing a movie, and so this is inspired by that," Britton said.

He and co-owner Jason Hollenbeck started the business out of a renovated horse trailer. They had no background in coffee before starting the shop, but that didn't stop them from succeeding and growing—they now own three storefronts.

Britton and Hollenbeck are branching out even further. Soon they will begin to sell their own roasted coffee beans online and in stores. They also recently started a podcast called "Boom Roasted."

"Sometimes it's fun for people to watch kind of a train wreck, and so we are that train wreck," Britton said.

Those interested can follow along with Britton Coffee Co. on Facebook and Instagram. Boom Roasted can be found anywhere you listen to podcasts, the owners said.

There are locations in Hanover, at 11 York St. and 2633 Baltimore Pike, and on in McSherrytown at 639 South St.
