WASHINGTON — The truth is not all UGG boots are created equal when it comes to snow and rain. If you plan on wearing your favorite boots outside this winter, here's what you need to know.
UGG boots are not waterproof. At least not the classic boots. The main material used for the boots is a high-grade sheepskin, which offers natural insulation that keeps your feet toasty even on the chilliest of days. So, it may seem fitting to reach for your UGGs on a snowy day, but exposure to moisture can permanently damage sheepskin. Water stains it.
It's also important to note that the outer layer of UGG boots is typically made from a pretreated suede (a type of leather with a velvety texture) meant to withstand light rain and snow. Although suede is water-resistant, it is not waterproof. Water can cause the bristles of suede to become weak and thin, and with time they'll eventually tear off. This can cause the suede to develop bald spots, making your UGGS look much older and worn-out than they are. If the forecast shows heavy snow, it may be best to save your UGGs for another day.
One way to combat this problem, and to get more use out of your boots on wet weather days, is to treat your UGG boots with a water-resistant spray. The spray sold online and through a variety of retailers helps protect the fabric of the classic boots if you find yourself caught in light rain. Officials warn that even with waterproof treatment, water-resistant UGG products can become damp when submerged in water or snow and this can leave marks on the suede exterior.
Now, some UGG styles are designed to brave the elements with their waterproof features including the Adirondack Boot III or the classic Klamath mini. These shoes are not only waterproof but rated for weather -32 degrees Celsius.
So, if you want to wear your UGGS out, there are options.
Taking care of UGG boots in snowy conditions:
- Waterproof the boots before wearing them.
- Brush your boots regularly with a suede brush to gently remove dirt and debris.
- Clean your shoes promptly; don't let snow, salt, and watermarks sit.
- Dry your boots properly. If they get wet, stuff them with paper towels to help them retain their shape. Let them air dry.
- Invest in a shoe care kit. The one from UGG includes a cleaner and protector.
- Save them for more casual outings and not for heavy snow activities like shoveling or skiing.
History of UGG:
UGG was founded in 1978 by Australian surfer Brian Smith and Doug Jensen. The boots made of sheepskin were popular among surfers in Australia in the early 1970s before being brought to the States.
