Harrisburg group to provide litter pick-up, free meals to unhoused individuals

HARRISBURG, Pa. — Dozens of unhoused people can receive a free meal on Saturday, May 4 thanks to a volunteer group.

The menu is set to include hotdogs, sausages, hamburgers, fries, water and juices and will be held near the PennDOT headquarters located along S. Front Street in Harrisburg. 

A litter cleanup will also take place before the meal. 

The schedule for the event is as follows: 

-9:30 a.m.- Volunteers arrive (people wanting to help are encouraged to show up)

-10 a.m.- Volunteers start litter pick-up

-11 a.m.- Meal distribution

Donations for food and water are being accepted. The group is also seeking donations for tools and supplies such as shovels, rakes, wheelbarrows, sternos and heavy-duty gloves. 

The event is organized by Tent Valley Ministries, which was founded in 2020 when a loose-knit group of women gathered to serve the community by providing free meals and clothing. 

To register as a volunteer for the event or supply donations, contact Tent Valley Ministries' administrator Kelly Lester at (223) 231-6805. Volunteers should have on work boots or supportive sneakers.
