Central Pa. butcher shop prepares for rush as food cost continues to rise

J.L. Miller Sons Meat Inc., located in York County, said they’ve been working to keep prices stable and cutting back in other areas.

YORK COUNTY, Pa. — According to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, Americans will spend on average $89.96 for food this Memorial Day weekend.

Some staple items, like hotdogs, hamburgers, steak, and chicken are among those rising in price. J.L. Miller Sons Meat Inc. located in York County, said they’ve been working to keep prices stable and cutting back in other areas.

“We always ramp up for the weekend, holiday weekends are one of our best weekends throughout the year,” said Tom Cox, the owner and operator of J.L. Miller Sons Meat Inc.

J.L Miller Sons Meat Inc. has been open for several years and serving the community for longer. With two locations, customers often frequent the shop for different cuts of beef, homemade barbeque sauce, and dry-aged beef. Cox said that all their products are sourced locally.

“We have three different suppliers in the area that we get our meat and products from,” said Cox.

However, sourcing from neighbors had a domino effect when inflation started rising. Cox said that many of the farmers, the equipment they use, and the resources they depend on to feed the animals, and regulations have made it difficult to keep prices from rising.

Cox explained that he was able to keep prices steady by making some sacrifices of his own.

“We try to absorb as much and maybe do things a little more efficiently for ourselves and not spend and throw so much away -- that way to not put a price up,” said Cox.
