Three-time overall World Cup alpine skiing champion Mikaela Shiffrin on Saturday won the giant slalom in Lienz, Austria, giving her 63 race titles overall, good for No. 2 among female skiers all-time.

Only Lindsey Vonn with 82 World Cup race wins in ahead of her. Vonn won 43 of her titles in one event — the downhill — and Shiffrin will go for her 43rd slalom win Sunday.

“We did a lot of work (since her last giant slalom in Courchevel, France) — my team, my coaches — and that paid off in today, and that’s one really big step in the right direction,” she said, according to the US Ski and Snowboard website.

Marta Bassino of Italy was second and Katharina Liensberger of Austria finished third.

The 24-year-old Shiffrin again leads the overall standings with 646 points. Federica Brignone of Italy is second, a massive 215 points behind.

After the race Shiffrin retweeted a Team USA post celebrating her place on the all-time wins list.

“Ok this graphic is kinda sick. Go #TeamUSA!!!!,” she wrote.

Vonn retweeted the same graphic from Team USA.

“Love this!! Congrats @MikaelaShiffrin Can’t wait to see you break the all time record too! #goUSA,” Vonn wrote.

Shiffrin is chasing two other people on the all-time World Cup victories list. Ingemar Stenmark of Sweden (86) and Marcel Hirscher (67) have the most victories by men.

Annemarie Moser-Pröll of Austria is third among women.

The win was the first for Shiffrin in any discipline since December 1. She had 17 victories last season.

“I wasn’t really expecting to win today, I just was trying to do better than what I did the last GS (a 17th-place finish),” she told reporters.

She said her training this week had been amazing and she felt good with her skiing going into the racing.

One of the things she had to change was her attitude, that she shouldn’t think she deserves to win, she said.

“I just have to ski my best and see what I can do,” she said. “Doing those two runs today was really, really special. You can’t sum it up on paper.”
