Man dies after hostage incident in Manheim Township

Police say the suspect died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

LANCASTER COUNTY, Pa. — A man is dead after he barricaded himself and a woman inside of an apartment and apparently shot himself in the head.

According to emergency dispatchers, police responded to the first block of Knollwood Road in Manheim Township around 8:00 p.m. on December 8.

Police say that a 911 call was made from a relative inside the home indicating that a woman was in danger.

Authorities say they arrived, knocked at the door, and announced their arrival.

A few minutes later, a woman yelled out of a second floor window, asking for help, police said.

Soon after, authorities say a shot was fired from a gun in that second floor room.

Around 1:00 a.m. on December 9, Lancaster County SERT arrived on scene and deployed a flash bang to make entry into the apartment.

When officers kicked open the bedroom door where the man and woman were located, officials say two shots were fired.

One shot was from a SERT team officer, and officials did not note if that shot struck the man.

The other shot was the apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head fired by the suspect.

Police say the victim was found in a closet and was not struck by gunfire or the earlier shot fired by the suspect.

No one else was injured in the incident.

The Lancaster County District Attorney posted about the hostage situation Wednesday morning on Twitter:

Police say the investigation into the incident is ongoing.
