Nearly 60 healthcare companies voice support to require COVID-19 vaccines for all healthcare workers

The joint statement calls requiring vaccines for healthcare workers a 'logical fulfillment of the ethical commitment of all health care workers.

PENNSYLVANIA, USA — Nearly 60 healthcare organizations are voicing support to require all healthcare workers to get the COVID-19 vaccine.

In a joint statement, the organizations said in part, "Due to the recent COVID-19 surge and the availability of safe and effective vaccines, our health care organizations and societies advocate that all health care and long-term care employers require their workers to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. This is the logical fulfillment of the ethical commitment of all health care workers to put patients as well as residents of long-term care facilities first and take all steps necessary to ensure their health and well-being."

Governor Tom Wolf was asked to weigh in on the issue on Monday. 

He said the state is not requiring people to get the vaccine. 

Wolf acknowledged it makes 'sense' for health care systems to want their workers vaccinated. 

But, he said, "I'm against the state mandate. If hospitals do that, I think if businesses of any kind want to do that, it should be up to them."

Penn Medicine announced earlier this year it would require its healthcare workers to get the COVID-19 vaccine by September 1. Read its full statement here.

Penn State Health spokesperson Barbara Schindo told FOX43, "so far, Penn State Health has vaccinated approximately 82% of its employees and students. While we strongly encourage all of our employees who are able to get vaccinated to do so as soon as possible, at this time it is not mandatory. This could change in the future." 

UPMC spokesperson Kendall Marcocci told FOX43, "UPMC encourages all staff to receive the COVID-19 vaccine and offers many opportunities for vaccination to ease this process, but does not mandate it at this time. Vaccination is one layer of protection; at UPMC, our multiple infection prevention efforts – including mandatory employee, patient and visitor masking – are highly effective at preventing transmission of COVID-19 within our facilities. We will continue to monitor COVID-19 activity and weigh all actions, including vaccination policy changes."

Wellspan Health spokesperson Ryan Coyle told FOX43,"WellSpan Health is constantly evaluating the latest vaccine data and we will continue to encourage our team members to get their shot of hope and receive their COVID-19 vaccination but we are not currently mandating staff get it at this time." FOX 43 asked what other requirements workers must also face at Wellspan in which Coyle responded, "to your second question, both vaccinated and unvaccinated healthcare workers have continued to be required to wear masks and follow CDC protocols in all patient care areas since the start of the pandemic."

Due to the recent COVID-19 surge and the availability of safe and effective vaccines, our health care organizations and societies advocate that all health care and long-term care employers require their workers to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. This is the logical fulfillment of the ethical commitment of all health care workers to put patients as well as residents of long-term care facilities first and take all steps necessary to ensure their health and well-being. Because of highly contagious variants, including the Delta variant, and significant numbers of unvaccinated people, COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations and deaths are once again rising throughout the United States.1 Vaccination is the primary way to put the pandemic behind us and avoid the return of stringent public health measures. Unfortunately, many health care and long-term care personnel remain unvaccinated. As we move towards full FDA approval of the currently available vaccines, all health care workers should get vaccinated for their own health, and to protect their colleagues, families, residents of long-term care facilities and patients. This is especially necessary to protect those who are vulnerable, including unvaccinated children and the immunocompromised. Indeed, this is why many health care and longterm care organizations already require vaccinations for influenza, hepatitis B, and pertussis. We call for all health care and long-term care employers to require their employees to be vaccinated against COVID-19. We stand with the growing number of experts and institutions that support the requirement for universal vaccination of health workers.2,3 While we recognize some workers cannot be vaccinated because of identified medical reasons and should be exempted from a mandate, they constitute a small minority of all workers. Employers should consider any applicable state laws on a case-by-case basis. Existing COVID-19 vaccine mandates have proven effective.4,5 Simultaneously, we recognize the historical mistrust of health care institutions, including among many in our own health care workforce. We must continue to address workers’ concerns, engage with marginalized populations, and work with trusted messengers to improve vaccine acceptance. As the health care community leads the way in requiring vaccines for our employees, we hope all other employers across the country will follow our lead and implement effective policies to encourage vaccination. The health and safety of U.S. workers, families, communities, and the nation depends on it.
