CUMBERLAND TOWNSHIP, Pa. – A fire in Adams County on Friday claimed the life of one woman.

Flames were spotted around noon, at a the home at 65 Roberta Way in Cumberland Township. According to the county coroner, 90-year old Jean Walter died in the fire.  Her son was able to escape the home and was flown to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore with severe burns.

Cumberland Township Police Chief Don Boehs said, “When he was in trying to rescue the elderly female, he inhaled a large amount of smoke. He had burning sensations in his mouth and throat.”

The coroner said Walter died of carbon monoxide toxicity and thermal burns.

A police officer who tried to save her was taken to hospital, but is expected to be okay.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. The home is a total loss.
