Shippensburg Area School District will not be sending elementary students home on the school bus today, Monday, October 7. The students must be picked up at their school — photo ID is required to pick up your child, the school district said.
The school district said this is a cautionary measure due to the “ongoing homicide investigation involving university students.”
“In an abundance of caution the Shippensburg Area School District will not be sending elementary students home on the school bus today. Parents or guardians must pick up their child at their school. This is due to the ongoing homicide investigation involving university students.
You must bring Photo ID to pick up your child.”
The school district offered more explanation in regards to the situation and decision-making:
Dear Shippensburg Parents/Guardians,
Shippensburg Area School District received information today that the University was closing due to a potential threat related to an incident near campus last night. We received this information after the secondary buildings dismissed and just prior to the elementary schools dismissal. With knowledge of this serious safety concern, we were forced to make a split second decision which was not to send elementary and intermediate school students home on buses. If university students were in danger, so would our students when dropped off at their bus stops. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused this afternoon. We appreciate everyone’s patience as our staff worked to release students to their parent or guardians. The safety of our students is and will remain our top priority.
Additional information will be forthcoming as we receive updates from local law enforcement. Based on the information received, we will determine if changes need to be made to our regular schedule. At this time, we are under the belief that we will be able to operate tomorrow as a regularly scheduled day.
