Rep. Brian Ellis resigns from PA House

HARRISBURG — State Rep. Brian Ellis has resigned from the Pennsylvania House, effective immediately.

Rep. Ellis tendered his resignation in a letter to Speaker of the House Mike Turzai on Monday.

The Butler County Republican wrote in part, “I have concluded that it is in the best interest of my family, the residents of the 11th House district, and my own health that I resign from the General Assembly.”

Rep. Ellis is currently under investigation by the Dauphin County District Attorney’s Office for the alleged sexual assault of a woman that occurred in 2015.

Last week, victim advocate Jennifer Storm confirmed that the woman who has accused Rep. Ellis of sexual assault filed a formal complaint with PA House Republicans. She has since issued this statement in regards to Rep. Ellis’ resignation:

“This is a new day in Harrisburg, one where we hope all survivors feel they can come forward, be believed and be treated with dignity and respect. We appreciate how respectful the staff and members of the House have been during this most difficult time for the survivor. We are also grateful for the calls for resignation that came from leaders across the Commonwealth from the Governor to House GOP leadership. It is clear that the days of sexual misconduct and coverups in our Capitol are slowly coming to an end.

While we still have a long way to go in creating more uniform policies and procedures on how complaints are handled and investigated, we are hopeful today that a new day of transparency and accountability is upon us. We truly hope this sends a message to other survivors who we know exist, you can break your silence, you can come forward and you will be supported.”

Gov. Tom Wolf has called for the resignation of Rep. Ellis after the allegations surfaced.
