CUMBERLAND TOWNSHIP, Pa.-- An 87-year old pilot hung upside down for hours on Saturday, waiting to be rescued from his small plane.

The pilot crashed into a row of trees just after taking off from the Gettysburg Regional Airport in Cumberland Township. The pilot of the single engine Cessna, called for help from inside the cockpit. Officials tell FOX43, the man reported hearing a "sputtering" sound just before landing in the trees.

While the plane was considered to be stable, emergency crews worked very carefully to get the pilot out of the cockpit. It took them approximately four hours to complete the rescue.

More than 50-volunteers from fire departments across Adams County were at the scene. The man's family was also there for support.

Crews say the pilot was not hurt in the crash.  The plane will remain in the trees until the Federal Aviation Administration arrives on the scene to begin an investigation.
