It’s been 70 years since the United Stated dropped an atomic bomb on Nagasaki, Japan.
The bombing, along with an earlier bombing in Hiroshima, led to the end of World War II in the Pacific, after Japan’s surrender.
More than 70,000 people died in the attack in 1945.
On Sunday, people gathered in Harrisburg to honor the attack victims.
Several local organizations held a remembrance service at Market Square Presbyterian Church.
The service has been held before, and was a tradition for about 20 years.
In honor of the 70th Anniversary, organizers decided to bring the service back to remember the end of a World War while praying for world peace.
Event Organizer, Melissa Carley Manning says, “Harrisburg is a sister City to Hiroshima. A lot of people don’t know that. Since around 1979. We thought we would honor that relationship.”
Organizers are now planning to hold the ceremony every year.
