Firefighters from the Pennsylvania Department of Forestry are helping to combat wildfires in central Oregon. A crew of 22 firefighters left on July 19 from Harrisburg International Airport to work as part of a wildfire team battling active building fires in the Ochoco National Forest.
A majority of the Pennsylvania firefighters who were deployed are from the northern part of the state. The crews are expected to return home on Aug. 9.
The team from Pennsylvania is joining other fire suppression crews from Delaware, Maryland, Ohio and West Virginia.
So far, the fire has burned through 6,506 acres in the Ochoco Complex. Officials believe the fire was sparked by lightning on July 13.
