YORK -- One person was taken to the hospital Monday afternoon following a shooting near the Gov. George M. Leader bridge in York City, according to the city's police department.
The shooting occurred in the area of North George Street and Hamilton Avenue. Police were called to the scene around 2:25 p.m.
Police say a 25-year-old Pedro Diaz was shot behind the ear and transported to York Hospital by a Good Samaritan in a privately-owned vehicle. He is in stable condition.
York City Officials say York Academy Upper School students sheltered in place when the shooting happened.
Students were, eventually, escorted to the Lower School for bus pick-up.
Eugenia Tyler, who lives near where the incident occurred, said the location of the shooting is concerning, referencing the nearby schools.
“You’re shooting [in] broad daylight...Anybody could’ve gotten hit. Anyone. That person obviously didn’t think what he was doing. You always got to think before you do something. For every action, there’s a reaction. It just shouldn’t be,” said Tyler.
This is the second afternoon shooting in four days within five miles of each other.
On Friday, Springettsbury Township Police say a shootout occurred on East Market Street, spraying bullets that struck two uninvolved parked cars in the Village Green Shopping Center.
Tyler operates a ministry, "Brothers and Sisters in Christ Stop the Violence," roughly 500 feet from where the Monday shooting happened.
She said she believes people need to start communicating with each other at community events, such as church or cookouts, as opposed to resorting in violence.
"Let’s come together as one, as a community. Love on yourself, tell someone you love them today, go up and give someone a hug, it just has to stop and it can be done if everyone comes together as one,” said Tyler.
