HARRISBURG, Pa.--Child safety and welfare was discussed at the state capitol today. The House Children and Youth Committee held a hearing to discuss staffing and retention within Children and Youth Services.

The committee listened to testimony from caseworkers from across the state. The hearing was the first of a series designed to examine how Pennsylvania's child welfare system is performing and what can be done to improve it.

Supporters of Cece's Children's Justice Alliance were in attendance. They offered written testimony they hope will improve procedures.

Cindy Weesner, a spokesperson for the alliance says, "Since most of our members have had interaction with various children and youth agencies, in one form or another.  we feel that we're uniquely positioned in instituting reforms and making things happen."

Last year, the House Committee helped with reforms which led to the first comprehensive update to the state's child abuse and welfare laws in nearly two decades.
