Dozens of people gathered in Harrisburg on Sunday afternoon to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Holocaust. People from all across the state came together at the Holocaust monument at Riverfront Park to mark the tragic anniversary. A Harrisburg resident also shared her mother’s experiences during the Holocaust. Those who attended say they hope the event will educate younger generations and help continue the fight against hatred all around the globe.
Rabbi Eric Cytrn of Beth El Temple says, “We want to do everything we can to educate people about the Holocaust and to make sure that events like the Holocaust, the tragedies are averted, that we make a commitment to fight against racism and hatred in the world.”
The Nazis killed an estimated 11 million people during the Holocaust between 1933 and 1945.
The annual Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Holocaust period normally begins on the Sunday before the Jewish observance of Yom Hashoah, Holocaust Memorial Day, and continues through the following Sunday, usually in April or May.
