Covering the shooting death of a WDBJ-TV reporter Alison Parker and Photographer, Adam Ward, I talked to anchors about how this tragedy hits too close to home.

I said, "When we go out to cover a news story, the last thing we think about is if our lives are in danger.  We have a deadline to meet, sometimes we're doing stories in a tense, emotionally charged environment.  And we want to connect with people we interview and you, our viewers.  This is not something my colleagues and I take lightly."

Parker and Ward were shot this morning in Roanoke, Virginia by a gunman described as a disgruntled former station employee.  Police chased the suspect who then shot himself.  He was pronounced dead hours later in the hospital.

When FOX43 Anchors, Evan Forrester and Heather Warner asked me if the incident makes me scared to go out and report, I said, "I couldn't imagine doing anything else."  And "Be wary of your surroundings, but do your job."

I've been a reporter for nearly 10 years, and I can't recall anything like this happening.  Some of my former colleagues are connected to victims in some way.  Everyone in the TV business is family.  #westandwithWDBJ
