A fire destroyed the barn of a York County family Wednesday evening. It happened on the 200 block of Reeds Road in Chanceford Township. The homeowners said they heard a loud explosion around 4pm while waiting for their daughter’s school bus. When they ran home they found that their barn was on fire. It destroyed nearly everything inside including exercise equipment.

The homeowners say that they were turning the barn into a training facility. They were going to teach their son how to wrestle in it. That’s why the weights were inside. If the fire had happened in a week they would have also lost a brand new wrestling mat. The state fire marshal is investigating the cause of the fire. Equipment from more than 10 different departments was used to put out the flames. When they got to the scene it was fully engulfed.

Daryl Miller is the New Bridgeville Assistant Fire Chief. He said “there wasn’t too much we could do with it. When we got here our guys did the best they could with it. I mean they saved the back part of the barn. And they saved this front barn here but beyond that everything else inside, as far as I’m aware of, was a total loss.”

The homeowners said they have insurance for the barn. They did not say whether they plan to rebuild it.
