Bermudian Springs High School in Adams County is preparing for the worst.
Officials held mock school bus accident drills on Sunday.
The drills, at the Hampton Fire Hall in New Oxford were held in response to a real life head on crash that involved a school bus that was carrying students back in January.
Students suffered minor injuries in that crash.
Both school and fire department officials have been meeting over the past eight months to reflect on the accident and identify areas where they can improve on how to handle similar situations in the future.
“We had this school bus roll over onto its roof and everything went well, but we thought we could improve our communication with the school,” says Hampton Fire Chief Randy Wolf.
“We took the situation, the accident in January, and we built from that and we looked at all of policies and procedures and tweaked them to what we needed to do to make them better. Today we got to practice those, so it was a great practice for all of us and definitely an improvement to handle a situation like this,” says Todd Straub, School District Director of Transportation.
Students, parents and emergency crews took part in today’s drills.
